Clove or "laung" is a spice used almost in every Indian Tadka to spice it up a little more. Cloves are the aromatic flower buds of a tree in the family Myrtaceae Syzygium aromaticum. Cloves are used in the cuisines of Asia, Africa, and the Middle East and lend flavor to the meats and curries. They are known for their medicinal and culinary qualities. Cloves are also used in Indian Ayurvedic medicine where the essential oil is used as a painkiller for the dental emergencies. Clove is also a carminative i.e. a herb or preparation that prevents the formation of gas in the gastrointestinal tract. They have the strong aroma which adds to the food. Cloves have many medicinal properties such as they are anti-oxidant, antiseptic, local anesthetic, anti-inflammatory, warming and soothing properties. They are used a flavoring agent too. Cloves also have various constituents like essential oils, tannins, and flavonoids. The active principles of clove increase the gut motility and digestion power through gastrointestinal enzyme secretion. They are used for upset stomach.
