Benefits of Organic Farming?
Earth’s been exploited harshly in last 50 years, but bow some of us have started to open eyes and realise that this may not be sustainable. We realised, humans are mere part of ecosystem which constitute various living organisms and earth itself. While deciding to buy organic product, imagine why these products have popularized and governments are regulating their quality.
Organic food is the grown in farms certified for employing organic practices which apply a holistic approach that strives to enhance the cycling of resources, conserve biodiversity and promote balance in ecology. The farmer says no to artificial fertilizers, chemical pesticides, and synthetic hormones, etc. Traditional farming methods are employed in compliance with the modern ecological practices and machinery technology.
These farm lands are certified by a regulatory authority such as European Commission for Europe, US Department of Agriculture (USDA) for the USA and National Program for Organic Production (NPOP) in India.
Nature and science have given us enough reasons to turn to organic food, some of them are:
As organic food is produced organically, therefore, it contains more nutrients and its diet increases consumption of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants in the body. On the other hand nonorganic food has fewer nutrients and contain cancer causing pesticides.
Studies show that pesticides affect children four times more than an adult. These can cause cancer and degrade brains development. Pesticides are more harmful for unborn babies.
Organic Foods do not contain any of these harmful pesticides and toxins.
Organically produced food is said to taste better as they are produced on well balanced, nourished soil which produces healthy and strong plants. Prepared organic foods really show the taste difference as they do not contain any artificial chemical flavor
The surface discharge of water from non-organic farms and food processing units contaminates the water bodies by mixing unwanted pesticides and toxins. Methods of organic farming keep the water bodies safe from contamination and also consume less water.
Genetically modified organisms(GMO) and Genetically engineered(GE) are crops and animals whose DNA has been modified with a motive of making them more resistive towards pesticides and develop some insecticide on their own, this makes them more hazardous. To be safe, Organic is an option.
Organic farms use various sustainable farming methods including mulching, windbreaks and composting which make soil fertile and help in reducing the soil erosion by covering the topsoil.
Due to pesticides, organic content is lost and the soil erodes through water and air.
Farm-men who apply pesticides and herbicides in nonorganic farms are more prone to cancer. Nearby water bodies also get contaminated which farmers use.
Organic Farming’s crop rotation enables soil to regain its structure with time. Pesticides used in non-organic practices have deleterious effects on long-term species. These pesticides impair the reproductive abilities of these organisms which threaten their diversity.
Organically produced food promises the consumer that the environment has not been harmed for producing this food. Organic food comes with a trust that the product is safe, healthy, fresh and tastier with only its natural flavor.
